System Development Issues

Problem points of system development

At Silverlake, we acknowledge the fact that many of the failures in system development can be linked to internal miscommunications.
Corporations have many sections such as IT sections, Business sections and Operation sections, and even when they speak the same language, they each communicate using different terms.

In system development, the IT section usually translates the requirements of other sections into system terminology and then communicates with vendors. If each sector is allowed to participate in system development using its own terminology, it will lead to a saving of IT section labor, and reduce of the problems of translation (such as perception gaps.) This also holds true for communications between vendors and their customer IT sections.

Systems that undergo changes will transform themselves into "black boxes" in a long run and processes will become complex with many repeated detour. We call this a "spaghetti bowl phenomenon".

This "spaghetti bowl phenomenon" of processes not only wastes resources but also slows down processing time and complicates system maintenance. To avoid this phenomenon, it is necessary to have a system that is capable to keep processes linear and lean even after it underwent many changes over a long period of time.
